November 4. A Planet Raspberry is the most fantastic smoothie the world. I could literally drink this every day for the rest of my life and never get tired of it. The cold, smooth drink slithering down my throat makes me sigh in satisfaction. My creamy, butter infused mashed potatoes make me want Thanksgiving to come sooner! Baby carrots speckled with herbs have that slight crunch as I tenderly bite through their orange façade. The scent of the savory grilled asparagus wafts through the air and into my nostrils causing me to drool because I’m so hungry! And finally, my 10 oz. rare steak lies before me, dripping in wonderful juices longing to be torn apart by my pearly whites! I have waited all day for a hardy meal, and boy, it sure paid off! I haven’t enjoyed a meal in such a long time; this West End steak really hit the spot! I ate this meal with three girls from my hall. I find, as mentioned in class one day, that it is essential to eat with people you love because you will enjoy the meal more. If you aren’t in a happy mood, your food simply won’t taste as good! I also think that you shouldn’t settle; walk the longer distance to West End or Hokie Grill if you know you will enjoy your meal more!

November 3. A typical day at D2… Tim’s thinking his future lies in competitive eating.
One of the cardinal rules of dining is to never eat alone unless it is necessary. Surrounded by my fellow students virtually 24/7, it is exceedingly easy to pop into someone’s room and invite them to a casual lunch at Owen’s. Being around people immediately enhances a good mood into a great mood and an average food into a seriously enjoyable meal!

November 2. I have an epically huge math test tomorrow so I can’t be bothered to leave my nook in Squires and go out to a dining hall to eat real food; this cardboard, faux-pizza will have to suffice. It doesn’t. I feel as if I am consuming lead; each chewy bite is just sinking to the pit of my stomach. I’m from New York and pizza is kind of our thing. We’re known for our deliciously hot, cheesy, greasy slices, and this fake stuff just isn’t really doing it for me! The men that work in the pizzeria make your food right in front of you; flour the granite countertop and the big slimy ball of dough, roll it our until it is in a big circle, toss it high in the air in one spinning movement and let if fall gracefully back onto his nimble fingers. Spoon the spice-infused sauce onto the dough and sprinkle chunks of white mozzarella onto the dough! Voilà! A pizza! That’s New York style; I have no idea what goes into the making of this Sbarro stuff. I’m skeptical to eat it again, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and I was hungry and needed food!
After the Food Inc. video we watched in class, I became oddly aware of everything I was consuming for the next couple of days. It was so upsetting seeing the cruel, brutal methods factories use to slaughter animals; I couldn’t eat meat—especially chicken—for the next couple of days, everything about it was gross. Not knowing where your food comes from and the process in which it is prepared is a very disconcerting thought. Furthermore, the unethical aspects of eating certain animals is greatly outweighed by desire to taste something delicious; is it humane to own a pig as a pet and eat bacon? Certainly not, but people do it anyways! But this raises the question, how are we able to eat particular foods and not others? What makes eating a horse so different than eating a cow? Religion, morals, ethics restrict and separate us from eating just anything.

Day 3. November 1! You know what they say… An apple a day keeps the doctor away! But I enjoy bananas more than apples, and find myself eating them quite frequently of late. The selection of an adequate banana is a scrupulous process; any bananas idling by themselves, unattached to a bunch, can immediately be eliminated. If the fruit has splotchy dark brown bruises masking the smooth yellow exterior or is a ripe green, I quickly move on to the next banana, hoping to find the perfect one. I think the reason I enjoy this wonderful fruit so much is because it reminds me of home; every morning before I reluctantly hopped on the bus for school, I grabbed a banana from the fruit bowl in my kitchen and ate it on the drive over. MapQuest declares that my house is approximately eight hours, fifty-nine minutes (542.73 miles) from Virginia Tech; I’m a far way from home, and bananas have become my comfort food. It’s an atypical food to find solstice in, but bananas have helped me trudge across the drill field to class in the morning, console me when I am homesick, and remind me that no matter where I am on this earth, I will always be connected to my home if I am eating a banana.
